Earl Thomas performing at the Queer Harlem Renaissance Festival at the African American Cultural Center in San Francisco. Never heard his music before that night and was absolutely blown away. Three new friends of mine speaking at Occupy Oakland a couple of days after their feet hit the Bay Area (and a couple days after I met the boys) for the first time in over two years. Sarah had been back intermittently for a few months and I had gotten to know her over time, but Shane and Josh hadn’t seen the awesomeness of Oakland for a little too long.

What struck me the most was how Shane spoke about how he and Josh had been traveling to different parts of the U.S. before finally landing in the bay. With amped up emotion Shane solidly declared how he finally felt like he was home. And what a energetic and powerful time to come back. They all declared their intentions to use their “celebrity” to bring as much attention to social justice issues from prison rights, occupy, and much more.

Here’s a blog post and with a video link that Josh’s friend Farah posted with a video of all three speaking at San Quentin. It’s incomprehensible to think that they went on multiple hunger strikes, one of which went on for 17 days. The purpose…to receive letters from their friends and family.
